ARMENIA TO EXPORT FISH AND CRAYFISH TO RUSSIA

For the first time Rosselkhoznadzor certified 22 enterprises producing fish and processing crayfish in Armenia in 2009.
Enterprises received permission to export their products to Russia,
The first delivery is scheduled to the Kaliningrad region.
About 200 enterprises are currently engaged in fish production and processing of crayfish In Armenia.
Their annual production reach about 5 000 tons. They are able to increase production 2 -2.5 times.
FISHING INDUSTRY OF ARMENIA CAN PROVIDE EXPORT TO EUROPE

250 Armenian fish farms annually produce up to 3500 tons of fish, of these mainly sturgeon and trout ; however, fishing industry of Armenia is able to produce from 150,000 to 300,000 tons annually providing a turnover in 1,5-2 billion drams, said chairman of the Fish Farmers Union of Armenia, Arkady Gevorkian.
Armenian fish industry has produced nearly 25,000 tons of fish in 1990s, and 1,500-1,800 tons by 2000. It needs new technologies to export.
After economical negotiations between Russian and Armenian governments, Armenia starts exporting fish to Russia (since December 2009, as Russian markets were closed because of swine-flu). Export to Russia registers 6 tons in January.
Once Armenia has exported fish to Georgia. Russia often closes its markets, possibly, trying to back local industries.
European markets are also profitable for Armenian fish industry’s exporting ; it is necessary to provide European safety standards to start exporting to Europe. This is a complicated matter, as Armenia hasn’t got answerable laboratories.
ARMENIAN FISH BREEDERS HAVE FAILED TO SEE THE EXPORT VALUE OF WHITEFISH

According to the Chairman of the Union of Fish Breeders, Armenian fish breeders have failed to see the export value of whitefish. Today, whitefish could be sold on foreign markets for $5 per kg.
"We are losing an export potential we have been creating for decades. In the past we produced 8,000 tons of whitefish a year, today, we may lose this resource," he said.
Today, there are just ,170 tons of whitefish in Lake Sevan against as many as 30,000 tons in the 1980s.
Formerly, fishers were prohibited catching whitefish during maturation period, today, they are not.
PRELIMINARY REASON OF MASS ELIMINATION OF FISH IN HRAZDAN RIVER PUBLISHED

The Armenian Nature Protection Ministry told EcoLur NGO that chlorine was revealed in the samples of water from the Hrazdan River, which might become reason of mass elimination of the fish.
At present the Health Ministry of Armenia has launched examination to reveal toxins in the fish. All the materials have been submitted to the Kotayk Regional Police Department.
"EcoLur received an s.o.s. signal on 23 January. When we reached the scene, Arzni Gorge, we saw the river bottom full of dead fish, crabs and frogs. It was already the third day the Sevan gulls have been feeding with the fish having risen to the surface. On the scene we caught the Territorial State Environmental Inspection of the Ministry of Nature Protection of RA. Under the inspector, the initial checkup showed that approximately 500 m of the river zone was affected,’ EcoLur reported.
ARMENIAN GOODS TO BE EXPOSED IN SYRIA

Armenia will take part in the exhibition, which will be held in Syria in the autumn of 2010. The Armenian businessmen took part in the Syrian exhibition two years ago. Food, in particular Armenian dried fruits, canned vegetables, fruits and wine were in brisk demand at the exhibition and an agreement was reached to open a shop of Armenian goods in Aleppo.
Armenia’s CCI have 20 offices worldwide (USA, Europe, Asia and Africa) where, mainly Armenian businessmen work.
In 2009 CCI organized exhibitions and business forums both in the capital and the regions of Armenia. In 2010, CCI projects to participate in business forums in Eastern Europe, Thailand, and an exhibition in Germany.
LAKE SEVAN LEVEL REACHES INDICATOR OF 1965

As of January 1 2010 the level of Lake Sevan reached 1,899m 23cm. Such level was registered in 1965.
WB REGISTERS IMPROVEMENTS IN ARMENIAN WATER SYSTEM MANAGEMENT

The water system is managed by 3 foreign operators (5 companies), implementing different tariff policies, but 500 communities throughout the republic are not served by any operator.
But during a meeting in Washington, the WB stated improvement in Armenia’s water system management.
